Top Seven Pastries to Die For

Have you ever found yourself sifting through paper thin, sugar-coated, buttery layers of flaky pastry and just wishing for time to stop right there? Well, we are sort of in the same situation right now, here at Specialfoodz. So we thought to ourselves, why not come up with our very own list of ten delectable pastry delights, therefore here we are.

1.     Danish Puff Pastries – A thing that is quite tricky to master as the dough is kneaded and layered again and again until its quite like putty in your hands. Although the recipe is quite simple in its design, the method is what requires the care only a celebrated chef could master. Made out of all-purpose flour, salted butter, with raisins, brown sugar, jam and egg wash used as fillings, it is finished with an apricot glaze using water and apricot jam. Are you guys still on your seats?

2.     Croissant – A few things the French know perfectly well; their wine, clothing and of course their pastries. If you haven’t tried a croissant yet, now is the time people. A sort of variation of the Danish pastry (in its basic design, not the taste mind you), the croissant in its simple form consists of pastry that is layered again and again with loads of butter, coupled with herbs and spices, and cheese if you want to go spicy. Think of the places you can go to, just by having a bite of this VERY heavenly thing

3.     Apple pie – If you are talking about the classic pie, it has to be The Apple Pie. When the steamed cinnamon flavored apple that is layered in buttery pastry hits your taste buds, remember to NOT lose your footing. We are not kidding here people… Apple pies do that to you. This fruit pie is a tart made using apples as fillings along with other already divine ingredients such as Cheddar Cheese, and whipped cream, or ice cream as topping. Now isn’t that simply exquisite?

4.     Baklava – From the environs of the Ottoman Empire this is a pastry that is rich in its form. The layers that is pastry is made of is generally known as filo pastry (Greek for unleavened dough). The pastry itself has nuts as filling that is sweetened using syrup and honey. We’re guessing we have already piqued your appetite no?

5.     Cherry Pie Pastry – When cherries are in season, we suggest pies as the best option to celebrate its coming. The ingredients that goes into making this very delightful pastry is lots and lots of cherries (no kidding), tapioca, cornstarch, ground cinnamon (very nostalgic we know), freshly ground black pepper, freshly squeezed lime juice, coffee spoon almond extract, butter, sugar and all-purpose flour. At this point we will not be surprised if you are not hungry already.

6.     Aloo pie – Do not tell us that you were not waiting for an Indian pastry delight to make it to this already wonderful list. Well, here it is. The all famous Aloo Pie. Best eaten when it is piping hot, spicy and tangy to the mouth with loads of boiled potato to be had with each mouthful. The reason, this pie gives this list an edge is because it is a savory and is not for the faint hearted, forever sweet toothed souls. This pie is a mixture of mashed, spiced and boiled potato (big surprise there!) with other vegetables such as green peas or chick peas added to the mixture. This mixture is fried with a pastry that is made out of flour and water.
7.     Opera cake – This is one Gateau (cake in French, we like to use fancy words…) that will give you a run for the money with its layers of cake that is soaked in coffee flavored syrup which is then layered with chocolate ganache and butter cream. Fancy that!
