Apart from the
varied cuisine that is available from every state in India, each state is known
for its unique full meal or what we would call a Thali. A thali in its
basic form comprises of bowls with each bowl having its own little dish such as
rice, chapatti (flat bread), sabzi (a sort of dry vegetable gravy),
some sweet dish and assorted curries. As every state has its very own, thali, we will list out to you, some of
these traditional thalis, in order to
enlighten you on what you are missing if you haven’t tried one of these yet.
1. The South Indian Thali – If you looking for one of those elaborate meals with more than a
dozen items to satisfy your appetite, what you must try is the South Indian Thali. As a rule, you have a bowl of
rice, sambhar (a kind of curry native to the south of India), kootu (vegetable curry that is cooked
using lentils), paapad, curd and the akkaravadisal (a sweet that is made
using rice and lentils), all of which make a complete meal. In addition to
this, one can find fried whole chilly which is a spicy accompaniment that is
eaten with the rice and curry, some chutney,
another sort of fried dish like yam or potato, upittu, and chutney powder.
One is definitely going to be leaving the place, happy and well satisfied after
this sumptuous meal.
2. The Chhattisgarhi Thali – A
stark contrast from the usual thalis,
the Chhattisgarhi Thali does not have rice or sambar as part of its meal. What
it does have is an assortment of curries, rice pakoras (chopped vegetables shaped like balls, which is then
fried), dehati vada (another fried
dish not unlike the vada), muthiya, fara and
a variety of breads like angakar poori, chusela and paan roti. For desserts, one
can find gulgulle, sweet fara and kusli. Although this thali involves many unfamiliar names that
needs getting used to, once you have every one of these dishes gracing your
taste buds, nobody will be complaining.
3. The Kathiawadi thali – This meal is a Gujarati
thali with more unfamiliar names to harangue with but it is worth the effort
even though most of these dishes are hard for the tongue unless you are from
Gujarat. Most of these dishes have a sweetish flavor, even the ones that are supposedly
spicy. You have the bajra bhakri,
raasawala dhokla, Gujarati dal, kathiawadi akha adad, chaas, gol papdi, methi
thepla, some chapatti and puri, and butter milk. Are you hungry yet?
4. The Bhojpuri Thali – A
multitude of flavors, vibrancy of color in each of the dishes and unmatchable
taste is what makes up the Bhojpuri Thali.
Starting off with the dahi chura (a dish made with curd), bharbhara, ghugni, sattu ka paratha, besan ki sabji, the kala channa curry, besan ki machli, and sweet mango curry will make your palate go wild.
5. The Maharashtrian thali – This thali has food that
is spicy and has non-vegetarian items on the menu, unlike the previously
mentioned thalis, which consisted of
just a vegetarian menu. For sweets, you have the aamras and sheera and for
the actual meal you have, danyachi usal,
sabudaana vada, kanda poha, mattha,
and the delecious pav bhaji. As an
accompaniment, you will have rice, chapatti, and buttermilk. This is one meal
that you cannot miss out on trying.
